01 / Problem identification

A job title is only the starting point.

Someone exploring an Australian occupation may know a familiar job title, an alternative name or an ANZSCO code. Those are different entry points into related information about classifications, assessing authorities and pathways.

Skillzam frames that problem as a discovery and information-structure challenge: bring those relationships into a consistent experience, while preserving the sources and versions behind them. The repository does not establish that formal user interviews or a market validation study occurred.

02 / Solution direction

One search, a consistent occupation page.

The implemented approach supports search by occupation title, alias and code, then opens a reusable occupation detail page. This makes the experience repeatable across occupations rather than requiring a separately designed page for each role.

The data model separates occupations, classification versions, assessing authorities, visa programs and sources. That separation matters because a readable page still needs an underlying structure capable of representing changing information.

03 / Building the product

Connect the interface to structured data.

The Next.js application includes a public website, occupation search and dynamic occupation pages. PostgreSQL and Drizzle migrations provide the schema foundation, and an import script supports bringing Home Affairs data into the project.

The occupation repository reads published records and related authorities and visa entries. A local fallback dataset keeps the interface available when a database connection is absent or a query fails. That is useful during development, but also means data freshness and fallback visibility need deliberate attention.

04 / Decisions & trade-offs

Resilience needs to remain transparent.

Reusable pages and a relational schema favour consistency as the dataset expands. Versioning creates space to preserve classification changes instead of treating every update as an overwrite of timeless facts.

The fallback path trades strict database availability for a usable interface. A proposed improvement is to make the active source and last verification date clearer, so a visitor can distinguish current published data from a fallback experience.

05 / Scale & next steps

Grow confidence before growing the catalogue.

The current milestone demonstrates search, detail pages and the data foundation. It does not establish complete occupation coverage, verified advice, user adoption or measured search success.

Proposed next steps are source review workflows, import validation, visible freshness information and search evaluation using representative titles and aliases. Scaling should improve the reliability of the information alongside the number of occupations available.

WHERE THE JOURNEY STANDS

What exists. What comes next.

A searchable occupation platform with reusable detail pages and a versioned data model. Ongoing source maintenance is the next product challenge.
